Puzzled Escape Rooms is based in the village of Taff’s Well, just outside of Cardiff, Wales. Don’t let its quaint Welsh village location fool you – the team have big plans. They currently offer two experiences: a ‘traditional’ escape room and a unique sit-down game. Going Up, their most ambitious project yet, launches on 17th April 2026.
Taff’s Well is just a 5-minute drive from nearby Whitchurch and a 10-minute walk away from the local train station. Free on-site parking is available for the duration of your games.
Accessibility: All rooms are wheelchair accessible.
Arrival

As we drove into Taff’s Well on a sunny Sunday morning, we loved that we could play an escape room in such a pretty location. The village is small, with few shops and amenities, but we made a quick stop at Coffi HQ to fuel up before the games. It’s a charming little cafe with great coffee and cakes, and we’d definitely recommend stopping by during your trip. In a funny twist of fate, a man with a Puzzled Escapes hoodie walked into the cafe to order a drink. It turned out to be the owner, Kevin, who was also our host for the day!
At the venue, we were greeted promptly at the door and taken straight through for a quick health and safety briefing. Only one person was required to sign a waiver for the group, which was done quickly using an iPad. There are a couple of unique quirks worth noting for this venue. The first is that there isn’t an official waiting area with seating, so I’d recommend arriving as close to the start time as possible. The other is that, for the first game we played, our belongings were taken by the GM and locked in a space within the room before we entered it. I suspect this is due to space constraints at the venue, but partway through the game, they were made accessible again. Once the briefing was out of the way, we were led into the first room.
Abandon Ship
Players: 2-6 | Duration: 60 mins | Difficulty: Medium
“Amidst the mysterious waters of the Celtic Sea, a vessel adrift holds secrets waiting to be uncovered. Abandon Ship invites you and your team to step aboard HMS Dolphin, discovered floating with no soul in sight. Your mission: unravel the mystery of its abandonment and ignite the engines to steer it back to safety. But beware, the sea holds more than just secrets, and not all is as it seems on this ghostly ship.”

Our thoughts
Abandon Ship saw us dropped in by helicopter to investigate why a ship had become stranded in the Celtic Sea. Our task was simple: to start the engine and bring it back to shore. Given the title of the room, I’m sure you’ve worked out that this task is not as straightforward as it sounds…
Ben was our GM for this game and was on hand to offer any assistance, including some very amusing, snarky comments. These were delivered to us via the ship’s computer, which took us by surprise. It wasn’t the only element of personalisation in the room, as I also found myself mentioned in a newspaper article. These personal touches really elevate the experience.
All of the rooms at Puzzled Escapes are driven by technology, but also include more traditional mechanical puzzles and locks. Abandon Ship is the closest to a traditional escape room experience, with multiple spaces to explore. These were nicely themed, with plenty of space to move around. It is worth noting that at one point, a team member will need to be comfortable crawling through a confined space.
The range of puzzle types was great, with a mix of thinky puzzles, screen-based tasks and tactile challenges. One minute you’ll be hunting for a physical key, the next frantically flicking through a manual to deal with a crisis. There were several points where the team split off into smaller groups to tackle different puzzles. As the game reached its climax, we all came back together to defeat the hidden enemy and save the day. It was a lot of fun!
AI Apocalypse
Players: 1-6 | Duration: 60 mins | Difficulty: Hard
“In a future dominated by rogue AIs, Puzzled Corporation is humanity’s last line of defence. A powerful AI virus has hijacked a cold fusion reactor, pushing it toward a catastrophic meltdown. As elite agents, your mission is to infiltrate the reactor’s systems from a secret location (The Rats Nest), bypass the AI’s security, and shut it down before disaster strikes.”

Our thoughts
The gears shifted somewhat for AI Apocalypse, as we were taken into the top-secret Rat’s Nest bar area. It’s a fantastic space with mood lighting, comfy seating and P.I.M.M.S., aka Puzzled Industries Marvellous Mechanical Server, a robot bartender. A really fun perk of this experience is that free snacks are provided. For us, these included a range of soft drinks, crisps and sweets. Ironically, we got so engrossed in the game that we forgot to really take advantage of these, but it is definitely worth highlighting!
This game was thrilling, different and definitely something I’d like to see more of in the escape room space. It straddles the line between a tabletop game and a more traditional escape room. I can’t begin to work out how the team put this together, with all its technical complexity. The game incorporates various boxes, wires and other physical elements that all interconnect.
To begin, one member of the team must scan a QR code using their phone to log in to a special web application. This houses a series of web-based tools to assist you with stopping the meltdown. The app syncs up with a TV screen in the room, so that all players can see the relevant information. This helps prevent potential arguments as you race against the clock by not restricting all of the online content to one device.
The puzzles were sufficiently challenging to add tension to the mission, but not so hard that we didn’t ‘get out’ on time. There were tasks involving sequences, translation, codes and wires. In general, we each had a moment to shine. This room was a stand-out for me, and I really hope that there will be more ‘missions’ available in future. It is a fantastic space, with lots of potential for other adventures.
Our GM for this game was Rhys, who we didn’t actually need to call on at all. We did get to have a great chat with him afterwards, though, and it was clear he shared our passion for escape rooms.
Ranking
Our current team rankings for the rooms we’ve played at Puzzled Escape Rooms are:
| 1 | AI Apocalypse |
| 2 | Abandon Ship |
We escaped… now what?

After completing each room, we were given printed copies of our team photos in branded folders. This is a great way to send teams off with a physical memory, rather than just a digital one. We also got to take home our personalised newspaper from Abandon Ship!
We left feeling energised and excited to return to play Puzzled Escape‘s newest space-themed room, Going Up. It launches on 17th April 2026 and promises to be one of Cardiff’s most immersive multi-room experiences! You can book now via the official website.
Please note: We weren’t charged for the rooms we played; however, this in no way impacts how we cover this venue and our experiences. This article includes my honest opinions about each of the rooms, and I don’t shy away from highlighting both positive and negative aspects.
